Barbara Hutton is organising a bulk purchase of solar panels.
Aim. This initiative aims to assist Moonee Valley residents get affordable solar electric on their homes.
We did this for the first time in 2009 and successfully signed up over 200 homes in Moonee Valley. This year our bulk buy is based around a solar system rated at 1.44kW. Each system should produce almost 6kWh of electricity a day averaged over the year (3 in winter, 9 in summer).
The installed price is $4580 if you sign up a friend and pay in advance; $4980 if you don't. Larger systems also available. We are using the Council's preferred supplier this time, Enviroshop. There is now a feed-in tariff for excess power you generate. Even if you use more than 6 kWh of electricity a day on average, you should still export significant quantities of electricity on sunny summer days. When the sun isn't shining your electricity is drawn from the grid at your normal tarif (varies depending on your retailer, but it's about 17 c/kWh). More details at www.vicheroes.com.au (Vic heroes: the quiet heroes of suburbia committed to saving the planet). Environmental benefits. This type of system will generate about one quarter of the total electricity of a typical house. This will reduce the annual carbon emissions of a typical Victorian house by about 3 tonnes.
